Selenium (Se) is present in the earth’s crust, often in association with sulfur-containing minerals. It is normally found in concentrations of 50–90 μg/kg, but higher concentrations can be associated with some volcanic, sedimentary and carbonate rocks. Selenium concentrations in soils vary widely, from 5 to 1 200 000 μg/kg, being higher in soils of more recent volcanic origin. Selenium occurs in soils in several forms, according to its possible oxidation states: selenides (Se2−), amorphous or polymeric elemental selenium (Se0), selenites (Se4+) and selenates (Se6+) (IPCS, 1987;UK EGVM, 2002).
Selenium is a mineral dispersed in water, soil and certain food. These minerals are vital for the proper functioning of many body processes. Diet is the primary producer of selenium in the human body. The number of selenium present in food relies on how and where the food was grown. Food supply such as wheat, chicken, fish, crab, and liver are typically sufficient selenium sources. As aforementioned, selenium is a necessary micronutrient for bodily processes which include, fertility, cognitive ability, and a healthy immune system.

Detecting Selenium in Drinking Water
A new method for the determination of total selenium in drinking water in the low ppb range was developed and optimized. The method use field device Supralab FD which was previously designed for the determination of arsenic in drinking water. The method relies on the formation of selenium hydride and its reaction with sodium perborate impregnated on a support to form a colored product, elemental selenium, which is optically detected. As a reductant, sodium borohydride is used. Thus, only Se(IV) reacts whereas Se(VI) cannot be reduced directly requiring pre-reduction with hydrochloric acid. The limit of detection of method (3σ) is 0.7 µg/dm3, the limit of quantification is 2 µg/dm3. The total reaction time for concentration up to 10 µg/dm3 is 5 min; higher concentrations require up to 15 min.

- Impurities accumulate at the bottom of the flask. Flushing of the filter can be done manually or with an electric auto flushing device.
